How do I fix a bad registry that won't allow me to double click drives in 'My Computer'??

I can't open my drives (c: d: f:) etc. when I am in 'My Computer'. I'm sure that the reg files have been altered probably by a virus or spyware or trojan. When I double-click on c: drive for example, it only comes up with the option to open it with the list of other programmes. I can access my drives in other ways, but all the same I want to remove (or replace) the reg file so that my system is healthy and free from hackers, virus, worms etc.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Btw, I have run Kaspersky and Regcure to repair the problems but the problem is still on my computer

Start %26gt; Run%26gt; enter "sfc.exe /scannow"

Press ok

You will need the windows XP disk. This utility will check all system files against the disk and repair if needed.

System File Checker (sfc.exe)

Reply:I would suggest to reinstall the operating system using your supplied factory restore discs, sounds like your current install is screwed.
Reply:Cleaning the registry is only one part of the problem you have, and it won't remove virus, worms, trojans, spyware, etc. If you don't have anti-virus, you should have. If you don't have spyware removal programs, you should have. You need to run these first, and clean up the registry after everything else is removed. Get Avast Home or AVG 7.5, free antivirus. Either one is excellent.

Get SpyBot and Ad-Aware. Immunize the computer in SpyBot, then run a full bot check. Remove everything it finds using Fix Selected Problems. Run a full system scan in Ad-Aware. Get SpyBot and Ad-Aware both at Download.com.

And last, you can safely and quickly clean the registry using Microsoft's Live OneCare Cleanup Scan. I use it weekly, but not without doing my "housekeeping" first.

Reply:You have a couple of options:

1. Perform a system restore. You would have to pick a date that you knew that it was working last.

2. Perform a repair of the OS. Instead of formatting a reinstalling, you could try to run a repair in order for the the Hardware abstraction layer, registry, and the system files are re-written. There's a good chance if done right, your data will be intact. (I can't guarantee that)

3. You could get some utiliies like registry mechanic (http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic... or Windows Regisrtry repair Pro (http://www.3bsoftware.com) the Avast! Virus cleaner tool (http://www.majorgeeks.com/avast_Virus_Cl... Oh yeah, be sure to update your existing spyware/adware removal utilities.
